L To R : Denton Beaty Commander Ron Brown, 1st Vice Commander Mitchell Shields, & Andy Greenspon
I joined the US Navy in 1979 and went to boot camp at RTC San Diego California. I was in Company 170. After graduation I was sent to VAQ-136 At Whidbey Island Washington. In February the Navy sent VAQ-136 to the USS MIDWAY CV-41 home ported at Yokosuka Japan. On my first cruise I became a Trusty Shellback. That was fun! I was there from 1980 to 1983. VAQ-136 sent me to Millington Tennessee to attend AME "A" School. I visited several ports of call during my time there. Being forward deployed and a West Pac sailor was the best time of my life. I then went to NAS Cecil Field Florida for 3 years. I then went to VS-30 on board the USS SARATOGA CV-60, USS INDEPENDENCE CV-62 and also the USS FORRESTAL CV-59. I earned my Enlisted Aviation Warfare Specialist Wings that I had actually had to the work to get. The Navy then sent me to NRD CHICAGO for 3 years as a Navy Recruiter. That was fun!!! My last assignment was with VA-34 on board the USS GEORGE WASHINGTON CVN-73. I am a Desert Storm Veteran and I enjoyed my time in the US Navy.
While with VAQ-136 in 1983 we crossed decked to the USS AMERICA CV-66 and did a Indian Ocean cruise and then returned to the USS MIDWAY in Japan.
